Lessons should be enjoyable for beginners, with varied activities and teaching to support a range of learning styles. There is a time and a place for scales and chords, but teaching students how they fit into the music is the "makes sense" approach to learning piano.
Just being able to press down a note and have it make a sound is a form of creativity! Through games and practice challenges as well as structured lessons, I teach children all aspects of the piano such as reading music, scales, chords, how all of these relate to each other and how to produce beautiful or energetic or impassioned sound without injury or strain.
Children and adults alike benefit from learning music to help with their wider cognitive development. In fact, you might be surprised to learn how closely music and math are related!
I tailor adult lessons to the goals of the learner. If an adult does not wish to read music, I will teach them about chords and how to play out of a fake book or from their ability to pick out a tune by ear. If they want to learn to read music, I will teach them how to recognise patterns on the page, to spot inversions and arpeggios, and to play seamlessly without hesitation or looking at the keyboard, to name but a few skills of the many there are to learn!
I try to make lessons fun, whether for adults or children. For example, we learn chords through use of the music styles of the Boogie and the Blues!
Whether you had lessons as a child and want to refresh your skills or if you have never set fingers on a keyboard, I make my lessons relevant to the learner. And we have some fun while we're at it!
A lesson for ages 6 through 9 would be one half hour costing $35 with a discount of $5 per lesson if a bundle of 10 lessons is purchased. All lower elementary lessons are once a week, though I am happy to deliver lessons twice per week on discussion with parents.
Ages 10 through adult usually take a 45 minute lesson at the cost of $45 and a discounted cost of $40 per lesson for a bundle of 10 lessons. However, anyone in this age range could take a half hour lesson at the $35 price if preferred.
A one hour lesson costs $50 and is usually taken by an adult or older teenager. Adults sometime take a lesson every other week due to their busy schedule. The discounted price with the card of 10 lessons is $45.
Payment is a month in advance with four hours' notice required to cancel and reschedule a lesson.
